Ngaben Cultural Celebration - Things You Must See in Bali

Death is considered as an important thing in most culture. It is the time to say goodbye to the beloved one.

I believe both eastern and western culture has the same perception about this particular thing. The only different is the way to celebrate the occasion.

Today, we will talk about the Balinese with their unique ceremony. This ritual only performed in Bali. You can not watch and find this performance outside Bali.


It is called Ngaben. This is actually the cremation ceremony which owned by the Balinese people.

In the Ngaben ceremony, the body will be positioned sleeping. Moreover, no one will cry for the body as the body is treated as sleeping. It is only the matter of time until the body will reincarnate.

You will only see Ngaben ceremony if you are lucky. Of course there are some dates when the Balinese are allowed to hold Ngaben but no one can guarantee that on that particular date, there will be a Ngaben ceremony.

The exact day of the ceremony should be consult with the ceremony day specialist. Coffin is the place where the body rest asleep. It is placed inside a sarcophagus or in wadah which made of paper and wood.

You may ask me about wadah. Wadah is a temple structure. Usually sarcophagus is built like a buffalo. Both wadah and sarcophagus will be brought to the cremation field.

At the end of the day, the Balinese will the body along with the wadah and sarcophagus. The fire has an important role in Ngaben ritual. It is used to free the spirit from the body and enable the reincarnation.
What makes it interesting is the procession of the entire Ngaben ritual. There are a lot of people involve wearing traditional clothes.

You will see that Ngaben is the most exotic ritual. Therefore, today, there are a lot of photographer come to Bali in order to take shots on the Ngaben ritual.
